With the increasing popularity of rowing workouts, you are probably wondering whether incorporating it in your exercise routine is the right decision for you, and whether it will have a meaningful impact with regard to muscle conditioning and enhancing your general fitness.
Rowing machines allow users to simulate water rowinq, and in the process, provide an incredible total body cardio workout. The international Federation of Rowing Associations claims that rowing workouts are very popular among professional athletes, since they are ideal for cross training. If you think about it, rowing athletes always look exceptionally fit. Studies suggest that rowing workouts require 25 percent effort from the upper body, and 75 percent effort from the lower body. This implies that you can work your arms, abs, back and legs, all at the same time.
Is rowing the best workout for you?
The answer to this question mostly depends on whether you prefer to exercise individually or as part of a team. People who like to exercise in groups may not appreciate indoor rowing. While rowing workouts are designed to be a solo form of exercise, there are currently many opportunities for indoor rowers to interact with each other, compare performances, and participate in competitions.
What are the benefits of rowing workouts?
One of the main benefits of the rowing machine is its ability to provide a nearly complete body workout. Rowing workouts strengthen and condition most of the major muscle groups in both the upper and lower body, with minimal impact, and provide great aerobic workout for burning calories. In fact, studies show that one hour of a rowing machine workout allows you to burn 800 calories. Other key benefits of rowing workouts include:
Low impact
The rowing equipment is designed to ensure that you exert the least possible amount of stress on any part of your body during workout, especially the knees. The use of natural rowing motion in a comfortable sitting position, close to the ground, cannot be compared to the strain of weight training or the sudden impact that you experience when running.
Body conditioning
Rowing provides excellent workout for the upper body, including shoulder muscles and the back. It also provides modest work out for the biceps, Pecs and abs, and increases wrist and arm strength due to continued gripping of the rower handles. Using a rower with a sliding seat allows you to work out your lower body as well, particularly the calves, upper front of thighs, and buttocks.
Aerobic workout
The use of adjustable equipment allows you to set an appropriate level of resistance to match your body type, so that your workout yields the best effect on the major muscle groups. The exercises increase your heart rate, giving you a great aerobic workout. Most machines allow you to monitor your heart rate though a chest strap that employs wireless communication.
