This has got to be my all time favorite healthy eating tip, and with the hot weather we have been experiencing this past week, this recipe will help you avoid the temptation of a trip to the ice cream parlour.
It requires a little thinking ahead, as you need frozen bananas on hand, but I try to keep a few bags in the freezer at all times for whenever a craving might hit. Buy extra bananas and let a few turn brown, then slice into buttons and place in ziplock bags to freeze. These are also great to pop into a smoothie. If your freezer is well stocked, you’re only 2 minutes away from a creamy, cold, (healthy!) treat.
This recipe is for two serves.
Ingredients
3 large frozen bananas
Method
- Place bananas in a food processor or blender. Process until fluffy and smooth. You will likely have to scrape the sides with a spoon a few times and move the bananas around to help the process. If you aren’t getting anywhere, let the bananas sit for a few minutes to defrost and try again.
- Serve immediately.
There is your basic recipe, now here’s some suggestions to make it exciting. Mix and match to come up with your favorite flavor.
Flavors: Add these ingredients to taste to the food processor and pulse to combine.
- Vanilla bean paste or extract
- Shredded coconut
- Raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa
- Cinnamon
- Any other frozen fruit. I like blueberry, raspberry, strawberry and mango.
Toppings:
- Nut butter of your choice
- Chopped, toasted nuts or coconut flakes
- Dark chocolate chips, dark chocolate covered almonds or cacao nibs
- Chunks of frozen fruit
Occasionally I make this banana ice-cream with a scoop of protein powder for my post-workout meal. Try it out on a hot day as an alternative to a protein smoothie for a fun way to refuel.
